| Two new initiatives are under way in North Africa to promote regional and international higher education and research cooperation. The United Nations University is establishing a sustainable development institute in Algeria, and a Regional Environmental Education Group will be set up in Tunisia and Morocco

SAUDI ARABIA: Rapid progress in developing higher education

| Saudi Arabia is seeing massive development in higher education. This is in line with a plan to achieve goals outlined by Khaled Al-Anqari, the minister of higher education, in a statement released at an international higher education conference held in the capital Riyadh from 16-19 April.

| The African Virtual University and the International Council for Open and Distance Education, or ICDE – a global body for the open and distance education community – have launched an e-learning partnership aimed at providing cost-effective and efficient tools to promote access to higher education in Africa.

AFRICA: Egypt’s Alexandria to set up branch in South Sudan
|
| Egypt’s Alexandria University is to set up a branch campus in the South Sudan town of Tonj, supported by a grant from the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education. The campus will ramp up higher education links that include scholarships for South Sudanese to study in Egypt.
